«Confesso: ho un istintivo moto di cautela, se non di estraneità, di fronte a eventi di questo tipo. Diffido del giovanilismo, del cattolicesimo alla chitarra, delle adunate oceaniche, dei ragazzi seduti attorno al fuoco a cantare quanto è bello volersi bene». L’argomento è insidioso. Vittorio Messori, scrittore cattolico, si muove con prudenza. Cattolicesimo alla chitarra? «È certo giovanilismo non esente da retorica. Detesto il culto della gioventù quando diventa ideologia. La Bibbia dice: sventurato il popolo che ha dei giovani come governanti». Non salva niente? «Ho confessato la mia diffidenza, ma sarebbe un’ingiustizia non approvare quello che sta accadendo a Roma». Approva, dunque? «Le giornate della gioventù, come ha sottolineato anche il Papa, mi colpiscono positivamente perché non le ha inventate nessuno: se le sono create i ragazzi stessi». Approva però diffida. «Diffido delle adunate oceaniche perché mi ricordano i regimi totalitari. Ma qui siamo in un clima di assoluta libertà». Sono tanti. Se l’aspettava? «Il numero di questi giovani può stupire solo chi non conosca il fatto che, seppur acciaccata e quantitativamente ridotta, la presenza cattolica nel mondo è ancora una della più ramificate e organizzate». Per loro il Papa è un mito. «Sì, e c’è il pericolo del culto della personalità, perché Giovanni Paolo II ha molto carisma. Come il ’68 portò al musical Jesus Christ Superstar, ora si rischia di fare la seconda puntata, John Paul II Superstar. Ma il Papa ne è ben cosciente». Cosa si portano a casa questi ragazzi? «La devozione si mescola al turismo, ma va bene anche così. In tanti si porteranno a casa un fidanzato o una fidanzata futura. E continueranno la loro formazione nelle associazioni e nelle parrocchie».
