Un livre du plus célèbre journaliste italien, Vittorio Messori, auteur de plusieurs best-sellers vendus à des millions d’exemplaires, vient de paraître chez Mame (320 p., 129 F) : Ce miracle impensable, avec comme sous-titre: La vérité historique sur le miracle qui dépasse tous les miracles. Ce livre est une provocation, il raconte la guérison soudaine, en 1640, d’un jeune Espagnol amputé trois ans auparavant. Cela paraît totalement invraisemblable, mais le procès canonique et médical de cette guérison soudaine est fidèlement conservé à Saragosse.

Messori, qui n’a pas peur de l’apologétique, relève le défi. Voici donc l’histoire et ses preuves.

Fin juillet 1637, en Espagne, un jeune paysan nommé Miguel Juan Pellicer est victime d’un terrible accident. Il tombe d’un chirrion (charrette agricole à deux roues) lourdement chargé de quatre cahices de blé. Une roue passe sur sa jambe droite, juste en dessous du genou. Elle fracture le tibia dans sa partie centrale. Les soins sont vains. La gangrène s’en mêle. On l’ampute. On enterre pieusement la jambe dans la fosse du cimetière réservée aux amputés. Voici notre homme réduit à la mendicité, peu rentable dans son village de Calenda. Il n’a récolté que le premier jour. Après, on se détourne de lui, on lui adresse seulement un petit bonjour protecteur. On ne peut pas donner tous les jours. Il doit faire le tour des villages ou des villes voisines pour s’en tirer. Ce qui n’est pas commode avec une jambe en moins. Trois ans plus tard, le jeudi 29 mars 1640 (l’année fatale qui clôt le siècle d’or pour l’Espagne, maîtresse du monde), il se couche, découragé. Et soudain, entre 10 heures et demie et 11 heures du soir, sa maman venue on ne sait pourquoi jeter un coup d’oeil dans sa chambre avec sa Candel (petite lampe à huile) sent un parfum : « une odeur suave que je n’avais jamais sentie auparavant », témoignera-t-elle au procès officiel. Etonnée, elle s’approche de la paillasse de son fils. Il dort profondément. Elle croit voir dépasser de la couverture non pas un seul pied, mais deux: «l’un croisé sur l’autre», témoigne-t-elle encore. Est-ce une illusion d’optique sous la clarté vacillate de la lampe à huile?

Au réveil, losrque le jour se lève, Miguel, si désespéré la veille au soir, croit qu’il est devenu fou; il a de nouveau ses deux jambes! Sa remière réaction intérieure est de demander pardon pour ses fautes. Il se sent inondé par la miséricorde du Père.

«Mais qu’est-ce qui t’est arrivé?» Il ne sait pas, mais un rêve lui revient à l’esprit. La veille au soir, du fond de son désespoir, il s’était recommandé à Notre Dame, comme chaque soir avant de s’endormir, mais plus profondément, avec la ferveur des désespérés. Dans son sommeil il avait vécu de nouveau son pèlerinage à la Sainte Chapelle de Notre-Dame du Pilar (Saragosse) où il avait oint sa jambe coupée avec l’huile d’une lampe du sanctuaire. Cette imploration était revenue dans son sommeil, sans doute à l’heure où l’invraisemblable se produisait. Toujours est-il qu’au matin sa jambe est là. Il ne doute pas que le miracle souhaité soit devenu réalité.

Prudent et non dispensé de rééducation, il prend toutefois ses béquilles pour faire ses premiers pas, car la jambe réimplantée est faible et il mettra quelques jours à en retrouver le parfait usage.

Beau récit populaire, dira-t-on, conforme aux lois des projections mythologiques. Pourtant le fait, car c’est un fait, stupéfia le curé et tous ceux qui connaissaient bien le mendiant unijambiste à Calenda et dans les villes voisines (comme ceux qui connaissaient l’aveugle né de l’Evangile). Devant l’invraisemblable évidence, le curé demanda donc au notaire de dresser un acte du miracle (Messori, p. 110-111).

Comme cette attestation paraissait invraisemblable, l’évêque de Saragosse, Pedro de Apaolazza, instaura un procès rigoureux, selon les méthodes juridiques exigeantes dont l’Eglise a l’expérience et le secret. Il conclut, un an et un mois après le miracle, le 27 avril 1641: A Miguel Juan Pellicer (…) a été miraculeusement rendue sa jambe droite qui lui nvnavait été précédemment amputée.

Tout avait été méthodiquement vérifié. De nombreux témoins, y compris ses parents, avaient parfaitement identifié l’amputé, avant et après. Un médecin et un chir-trr-l’ien avaient fait l’étude médicale et on s’était rendu au cimetière des membres amputés pour voir si on retrouverait la jambe de Miguel, enterrée là. mais on ne la retrouva pas. Un des médecins a même constaté la trace d’une morsure de chien antérieure à l’amputation, reconnaissable après restitution de la jambe.

Le miracle fit sensation (comme autrefois ceux de Jésus en Galilée). Le roi Philippe IV, alors maître du monde, vint visiter le miraculé, et ce seigneur des seigneurs s’agenouilla pour baiser la jambe restituée. Une -ravure témoigne de cet acte royal. unique dans l’histoire.

C’est ce que raconte en détail Vittorio Messori. Il voit dans ces constats une réponse à Voltaire qui disait «Ces miracles qu’on raconte, s’il y en avait un qui ait été vérifié par plusieurs témoins, on pourrait y croire. » Or c’est bien ce qui est arrivé à Calenda après un sérieux souci de vérification. Le procès n’a évidemment pas toute la modernité qu’on déploie aujourd’hui pour les miracles de Lourdes, avec le luxe des moyens scientifiques, mais les témoignages existent, sincères et convergents.

Certes, je reste déconcerté, car l’Église m’invite à être prudent, à éviter l’illuminisme et la crédulité dont les lendemains déchantent. J’étais allé au sanctuaire de Notre-Dame du Pilar, il y a 30 ans. J’avais été admis à feuilleter le procès canonique. J’avais été impressionné, mais sans avoir eu le temps de l’approfondir. Je n’avais également fait que feuilleter le livre rigoureux de A. Deroo : L’Honmme à la jamhe coupée (Resiac, 1997) sans oser tirer aucune conclusion, à cause de l’invraisemblance du fait. Et c’est ainsi que Messori se réfère à mon « incrédulité ». C’était moins incrédulité que prudence selon la tradition restrictive de l’Église. Un des médecins choisis par l’Église pour contrôler les procès de miracles exigés pour les canonisations me disait, à Rome: « Les miracles les plus étonnants, même vérifiés, nous n’en parIons pas. » De même, à Lourdes, la guérison soudaine de Peter van Rueder dont le tibia et le péroné disjoints se sont ressoudés n’a pas été retenue parmi les « miracles » de Lourdes. De même pour Gargh<m qui a témoigné, pendant tant d’années, de son invraisemblable guérison. Il est resté pensionné à vie pour son état grabataire irréversible, malgré sa parfaite santé recouvrée, la médecine officielle ne pouvant reconnaître un miracle. Pourtant sa conférence était convaincante, de même que son parfait état physique.

Je suis donc reconnaissant à mon ami Vittorio Messori d’avoir eu le courage de reprendre, avec son talent et sa rigueur, l’enquête déjà convaincante de Deroo.
L’argument massue des libres penseurs dans les réunions publiques était : « Vous faites un plat des guérisons de Lourdes, mais on n’a jamais vu repousser une jambe.»

A quoi les catholiques de combat répondaient du tac au tac: «Si cela se produisait, vous diriez que cela arrive bien aux grenouilles.»

Mais n’exagérons rien. La jambe de Miguel n’a pas repoussé, elle a été rattachée. C’est une «chirurgie » surnaturelle de réimplantation sans mécanisme de rejet, et le professeur Landino Cugola de la faculté de médecine de Vérone, chirurgien chef (prirnario), spécialiste des réimplantations, a été convaincu par les térnoicrlaaes de ses collègues du Xvtt` siècle car bien des points concordent (Messori, article intitulé : «Une chirurgienne nommé Marie », dans Gesu, mars 2001).

A chacun de former son opinion en lisant son best-seller enfin traduit en français, deux ans après l’édition espagnole, et que la presse française a ignoré depuis lors… comme tout ce qui concerne miracles et apparitions.

Est-ce pour garder «le secret du roi», scion l’expression traditionnelle par laquelle l’ Église justifie sa réserve en matière extraordinaire? Toujours est il qu’autant les célébrités (des lettres, des arts, de la politique ou de la découverte scientifique) cachent leurs misères et publient leurs gloires dont la presse nous rebat parfois les oreilles, autant l’Église se fait vertu de cacher les merveilles de Dieu et met tout son acharnement à s’accuser de tous les péchés commis par les chrétiens depuis deux millénaires, y compris les calomnies qu’il faudrait non point accuser mais rectifier, comme si l’Église se complaisait dans le rôle de bouc émissaire, qu’on lui inflige par le persévérant enseignement du mépris.

Le livre provocant de Messori va-til susciter un débat ? C’est peu probable car lorsqu’on viole la loi du silence, chrétiens et non-chrétiens, catholiques bon teint et anticléricaux préfèrent, d’un commun accord, enterrer l’événement encombrant. Je souhaiterais que le livre provoque un débat mais tout laisse prévoir que celui-ci n’aura pas lieu pour ce miracle comme pour tant d’autres prodiges spirituels éclatants de Dieu. L’aumônier de la chapelle édifiée pour célébrer le miracle a été un des martyrs parmi des centaines de prêtres, durant la guerre civile espagnole, et le fameux cinéaste Bunuel était natif de Calenda, comme Miguel : était-ce une des sources spirituelles de son inspiration foisonnante?
